Universal Machinery Sales Introduces New Power Rip and Angle Chop Saws - 12/2/2014
Universal Machinery Sales has introduced two new high-performance machines – a power rip saw and an angle chop saw.
Its new power rip saw has a simple 4’ x 5’ table design, but can do most jobs performed by other straight-line rips that are more expensive. The machine runs on a 10-horsepower arbor motor, with one-horsepower feed motor and integral feed unit. It comes with a variable-speed drive of 150 fpm standard, but 50-180 fpm fixed-speed is also available. Cogged steel drive wheels are standard, with non-marking polyurethane wheels optional.
The rip saw features an easy-adjust fence with hand crank and positive lock clamps. It can be set to rip hardwoods or softwoods up to 2.75” thick and ¾” plywood or particleboard up to 4’ x 8’ in size.
It can take readily available parts to keep it running, and also features an easy-to-change 12” blade that is fully enclosed. To change, you simply drop the arbor frame, loosen the arbor nut and switch out the blades.
The rip saw also has heavy-duty kickback fingers and a heavy-gauge belt and chain guard. Optional upgrades include a quick-set fence and digital readouts for faster size changes.
According to Universal, its new angle chop saw is both easy to set up and operate, and like its new rip saw, can use “off the shelf” parts. It comes with a standard 6’ roller in-feed and out-feed for high production rates, and you can choose between a 5-horsepower or 10-horsepower motor.
The saw can cut at angles from zero to 45 degrees on a 2’ x 8’ and zero to 40 degrees on a 2’ x 10’. Foot pedal control comes standard, and a palm button option is available at no additional charge. The saw also features back fences, three stops, a 36” working height, and a 4” dust port.

Honey Grove Hardwoods LLC of Honey Grove, Pennsylvania, won first place in the Industrial Sawmill category for utilizing a Wood-Mizer WM4000 industrial headrig to produce grade lumber for molding, caskets, veneer and pallet cants. In addition, the company improved its overall operation efficiency and yield since installing its Wood-Mizer sawmill.
Other contest winners included: Industrial Sawmills category – Wood Castle Furniture of Oregon, second; and Westgate Urban Woods of California, third; Hydraulic Sawmills category—Timbergreen Farm of Wisconsin, first; The J Team of Massachusetts, second; North Woods of Oregon, third; and Manual Sawmills category – Family Investments Inc. of Washington, first; True South Sawmill and Woodworking of South Carolina, second; and Verdin Sawing of Louisiana, third.
